Nubia: Why can’t my brothers let me eat first.

Hi everyone,

It’s me Nubia here today and after a long ordeal of having to deal with my brothers I finally got to try out some of this new cat food from Celtic Connections.

Oh you are wondering why I am so annoyed at my brothers? Well… this is what happened!

Renegade: Oli! Nubia! LOOK there is a gigantic bag of cat food!

Renegade: But why is this bowl empty…

Renegade: Oliiiiiiiveeeer I need your help! How do I make the humans fill up this bowl?!?

Oliver: For starters it would probably help if you didn’t disturb them while opening the bag. 😮

Renegade: But LOOK the bag is open now… I wonder…

Renegade: If I stick my head in here maybe I can get us some out of the bag quickly. 😀

Oliver: I don’t think you are going to be able to get all the way down to the food in there… Also I am waiting over here for food!!!

Oliver: At last! We’ve got food in our bowl. 😀

Renegade: Me me me me me! Let me have some!

Oliver: Excuse me…. wait your turn young one!

Renegade: But I am staaaarving. :'(

Nubia: Right! My turn before Renegade…

Renegade: WHAT! But I was next in line!

Nubia: *hiss* You run off to play with a toy! That’s equal to forfeiting your place in the queue. 😮

Nubia: Right now that I’ve had enough you may have some… brothers *sigh*

Renegade: Is it really my turn now??? No one else is going to come and disturb me…?

A quick intro and greeting!

Hello fellow cat lovers!

My name is Maria Appleby and I live in Champaign, Illinois (USA) with my husband and our cats. We have been married for 26 years, and we are both veterans. I grew up in Michigan on a small family-owned produce farm, the youngest (and only girl) of five kids.

I really find introductions difficult as I don’t have a lot to say about myself at all. I could go on forever about my husband and our cats.

Our kitties range in age from one year to 17 years old. One has a cauliflower ear. One has chronic pancreatitis. One has kidney disease. One has cancer. Several are siblings. About half of our cats came to us because their owners passed away. We have two former ferals that are now well adapted to indoor life. I have one ginger boy that’s been here over a year and a half and I still can’t pet him, but he comes out near me. Every time I get to see his fat orange stripes it just makes me smile. Some day shy kitty cat, some day, you’ll learn about ear scratches and chin rubs. I’m patient.

We are fairly experienced, but by no means experts, when it comes to cats. We have much to learn. We’ve hand-raised kittens. I’ve done “hospital care” at home (Sub-Q fluids, syringe feeding, administering meds). Nail trimming, brushing and combing. The occasional bath. Just like most of you who have and love cats, their care takes a lot of time, but it’s time we’re glad to give. We have awesome veterinarians that we’ve been with for decades. We have a great group of highly experienced friends in cat rescue too, thank goodness. More than once I have picked their brains for helpful advice and guidance.

One thing I can say, the pet community in general and the cat community in particular (online), has been wonderful. We met Marc from Katzenworld. We met many awesome rescuers. We have made many friends all across the United States, and from other parts of the world. We were supported when our cats were ill. We were comforted when we experienced loss. The benefit of having animal loving friends on social media has been profound to us. A blessing.

I would like to thank Marc for allowing me to join his community and for welcoming me with genuine kindness. I would like to thank all of you ahead of time, for your patience.

Here are a few photos of some of my cats, my furry kids, who bring me so much joy. I used to think we saved them. Like many of you, I learned they saved me.

Dirk and the Webbox Festive Pom Pom

What better way to celebrate the most wonderful time of the year by giving your cat a festive toy! At least, Dirk can’t think of a better way to celebrate Christmas.

Christmas came a little bit early this year when we received the Webbox Festive Pom Pom. They come in either red or purple with festive gold details as well! Let’s see if Dirk was interested….

PomPom 1

Dirk’s inner football player came out once again, though he doesn’t actully chase the Pom Pom quite as much as the football toy. He’ll actually really only chase it once: I throw it through the living room for him and he runs after it only to then grab it and kick it about. The cat version of fetch 😉

The texture of the Pom Pom is very similar to a ball of yarn and as we all know many cats love playing with balls of yarn (of course we need to keep an eye on our cats when they play with any types of string toys, such as a ball of yarn, as they can actually choke on it or it can get stuck in their intestines). Dirk is actually not one of those cats who play with balls of yarn! Yes, there are toys he doesn’t like!! The good news is that he does like the Webbox Pom Pom. I’m sure your cat will love pouncing and kicking it and they will provide some Christmas entertainment for the family 🙂

Now once your cat gets their paws on this Pom Pom they probably won’t let it go for quite a while. As you can see Dirk is certainly not about to give up 🙂

I mentioned that Dirk is actually not that big a fan of balls of yarn. Somehow rolling a ball of yarn around the house isn’t his thing. Maybe because there’s seemingly no end to the yarn! I don’t know, but anyway, if your cat doesn’t like them either then this Pom Pom is still worth a try. You can buy this toy online, but you can also find it in your local supermarket or pet shop. Webbox toys are sold by many retailers which gives you the bonus of seeing and touching the toy for yourself before buying it.

For people looking for a more interactive Christmas toy for their cats: Webbox also has a Festive Teaser Wand. Read all about it in my next post!

This is me with my lovely cat Dirk! Let me tell you something about both of us.
I work as a cat sitter for Cat Care London and am basically surrounded by cats 24/7! I also occassionally walk dogs or board hamsters or rabbits, which Dirk doesn’t seem to care about at all!
Dirk is roughly 8 years old. I got him 6 years ago from a shelter. Dirk is truly the most loving and lovable cat I know. He is very interested in people and loves being cuddled a lot. Dirk spends most of his time relaxing with me or anywhere around the house really. He is also quite playful and loves the games that involve interaction the most.
