2018 ‘Kittenhood’ photography competition winning image – photographed by Sara Grant from the UK
‘This is our seven-week-old foster kitten, Ziggy, the first time she discovered our bed.
What made it so cute (and something I just had to capture) was the way she lay down. Trying to fight the sleepiness, she pulled the covers towards herself and drifted off to sleep while snoring gently.
We were also caring for her five brothers and sisters at this time, as we regularly foster cats. We hand reared them all from five weeks old, and while Ziggy used to be super shy we worked on this with her and she really grew with confidence.
This is the exact moment her newfound confidence shone through – breaking away from her siblings to discover new territories on her own. She managed to climb up onto the bed and was very pleased with herself – a place so comfy and high up – and away from her pesky brothers!
Ziggy stayed with us a little longer than the rest of the foster kittens as she was the smallest of the litter and needed a little more TLC before she could be re-homed. As such, she now has a forever home (in which I’m sure she is keeping her humans very entertained!)’
Sara’s winning image features in the 2019 Kittenhood Calendar which is on sale to raise funds for International Cat Care’s welfare work.
