RSPCA Young Photographer Awards: Young Instagrammers Invited to Enter Their Animal Pics in Special Online Category

The summer holidays are here, so the RSPCA is encouraging aspiring young photographers to share their animal pics and win on social media.

The prestigious RSPCA Young Photographer Awards includes a special category for those aged 13 to 18 to enter, via Instagram.

The RSPCA’s Instagram photo category is open to 13 to 18 year olds, UNTIL Monday 1 August (2022).

Photos can be of any animal at all and entrants are being asked to use #RSPCAYoungPhotographers and #YPALoveAnimals on each post to qualify for the competition. Five shortlisted entries will then be put to a public vote on @RSPCA_Official from Monday 8 August 2022 at 10am to Friday 12 August 2022 at 12pm.

The lucky winner will be announced soon after and will receive £100 in Amazon vouchers and a prestigious RSPCA Young Photographer Awards trophy.

Last year’s Instagram winner was Emily Guest, aged 17, from Urmston, Manchester, with her picture of well-known local dog Ralph, taken in a meadow at sunset.

“Emily is a great example of why I love this competition,” says RSPCA Vice President Chris Packham, who’s also a judge for the Awards. “It inspires young people to get creative and learn or hone their photography skills. It encourages them to spend time with animals or get out into nature and appreciate wildlife. And most importantly it gives us lots of stunning images to enjoy – helping even more people share in the wonders of our natural world.”

“It could be a photo of their pet, wildlife or farm animals – anything that shows off their talent for photography while celebrating the animal kingdom,” says the RSPCA’s Christine Lunn, who organises the competition.

The Instagram category is part of the prestigious annual RSPCA Young Photographer Awards which offers young people up to the age of 19 the chance to win amazing prizes.

The closing date for the Instagram category is Monday 1 August.  Entries for the main part of the RSPCA Young Photographer Awards, now in its 32nd year, close on 16 August 2022 at 12 noon. Entrants can submit their images online at: rspca.org.uk/ypa

Last year’s three runners-up in the Instagram category were:

  • ‘Hidden in plain sight’ – a photo of a hiding cat, taken by Elana from Derbyshire

  • ‘Roger, cleared to land!’ – a picture of a gannet coming in to land, taken by Isobel from North Yorkshire

  • ‘Totally chilled seal’ – a photo of a relaxing seal on rocks, taken by Issy from Cheshire
