A Tail Of 2 Shelter Kitties (as written by Gigi)

Hi, I’m Gigi, aren’t I beautiful! Sadly I didn’t always look so good. When I was younger I was found in a really bad way at the side of a road. I was taken to an animal shelter where the hoomans made me well and put me up for adoption.

I was re-homed and taken back twice before my next hooman adopted me. You see, I was very scared of everything and really struggled to settle into a home, which made me sad.

My hooman adopted my brofur Maurice

Sadly, due to change of circumstances, we found ourselves at Yorkshire Cat Rescue which is a wonderful place but…

we so wanted a home to call our own.

We were adopted and taken back yet again. We are both deaf kitties you see, so we can be very loud when we talk and I guess some hoomans dont like that.

In 2012 when Maurice was 3 and I was 5, our furrever hoomans came along and took us home

5 gigi cheeky

In time I settled down and started to enjoy having a real home. In fact I was quite cheeky, I used to knock things onto the kitchen floor to wake our hoomans for food! but they didn’t mind.

Maurice and I look almost identical but we both have quite different characters.

I dont really like hooman cuddles but I show our hooman mum I love her by placing my paws on her neck and licking her face, I think she likes that.

Maurice loves hoomans and goes to our hooman dad for cuddles every morning. When he wants attention he will sit on the back of the sofa and bop the hoomans head with his paw…it always works!

Sometimes I’m a little glad that I cant hear him, when he sees another kitty in the garden, he howls at them through the window!

I recently won these prizes in one of Missy & Chances regular online pet shows, they raise money for Yorkshire Cat Rescue who found us our furrever home

Maurice only went and won Reserve Best In Show, but he is, of course, just as adorable as me

We spent far too long in shelters but we are both very happy kitties now with our own hooman slaves in our lovely own home.

Anyone thinking of adding a cat to their family should check out the rescue centres…they may not appear purrfect to some but they have so much love to give

Such beautiful kitties!?? I had a similar situation with a pure white kitty. No one wanted her and they thought she was vicious because she would grunt and yeowl loudly. She had the most beautiful blue eyes. I took her in to the vet and sure enough.. She was not only deaf…but a neatly pur blood Egyptian Mao!! The vets bread her once with another Mao and all but one of her 8 kittens were completely deaf. After that she got fixed and adopted! One of her little girls was deaf in only one ear…and she came home with me! She’s gone now….but I’ll never forget how quirky and fun she was!
It took 4 homes for her to find me….but she finally did.? God bless you so much for giving your little ones a wonderful furever home!??? Andrea Gaines.

I always thought, cats with two different eye colours were less likely to be deaf. I must remember wrongly. I know that cats with only blue eyes are very likely to be deaf.
Just looked it up on Wikipedia: “Deafness can occur in white cats with yellow, green or blue irises, although it is mostly likely in white cats with blue irises. In white cats with mixed-coloured eyes (odd-eyed cats), it has been found that deafness is more likely to affect the ear on the blue-eyed side.” I was under a misconception, that mixed-coloured eyes were unlikely to be deaf …

These gorgeous kitties belong to a friend of mine, Sarah Jo. All credit for the photos goes to her 🙂

It is our hope, Colette, Simone and our human, that those inviting a feline or more into their house would appreciate the fact that it takes time. For some it takes longer than others but with patience and love, so much is possible. Training humans takes incredible time and patience not to mention fortitude. Also, some humans are more work…

You and Maurice are beautiful babies! Please thank your hoomans for taking you into their home and giving you food, shelter, and a little bit of love. They are awesome!

Your both so beautiful I can never understand why people return you just because of deafness or any other thing. So happy for you both. Hugs and Purrs.

All my life I’ve loved white cats. I had a white cat named Jelly Bean with 2 different colored eyes just like Maurice, except he had some black on the head and the tail. People would ask me if Jelly Bean was deaf, but he wasn’t deaf in either ear. Thank you for sharing your story, Gigi!
