Supporting Cats in Need: People’s Postcode Lottery Raises Over £7.3 Million

A small black cat is lucky to be alive after she was abandoned at a council tip in the Derby area.

Now named Sweetpea, she is being cared for at Cats Protection’s Derby Adoption Centre, whose work is kindly supported by players of People’s Postcode Lottery.

Sweetpea was found by a member of the public at their local council tip, shut inside her carrier with no means of escape. Some medication inside the carrier indicated that she was on treatment for her thyroid, however there were no instructions to say how much of the drug she required.

The quick-thinking passer-by took her home and contacted the adoption centre team, who were able to take her into their care.

Sweetpea was quickly seen by a vet, who carried out blood tests and prescribed medication to help stabilise her condition. She later underwent surgery to remove her thyroid glands, check she had been neutered and fix some problems with her teeth.

Her aged has been estimated at around 12+ years and she is now doing well and ready to find her perfect new home.

Cats Protection’s Derby Adoption Centre Manager, Helen Wood, said: “If she had not been found when she was, we dread to think what may have happened to her. She could have been crushed to death!

“We understand that times are tough for people, with the current cost of living crisis, and perhaps her owners felt they had no other option but to give her up. But we would ask people to please, please get in touch with us if they’re struggling, rather than dumping their cats. We won’t judge, and we will help as soon as we’re able to.

“We really appreciate the support we receive thanks to players of People’s Postcode Lottery, as it helps us care for cats in need like Sweetpea. She is a sweet little cat and deserves a loving and kind home where she will get the care she needs.”

The unwavering support of players of People’s Postcode Lottery is ensuring the well-being of cats like Sweetpea at Cats Protection’s centres. Since 2018, players have raised over £7.3 million for the charity, awarded through the Postcode Animal Trust. The trust champions the conservation and welfare of animals, highlighting the profound joy that animals bring to people’s lives.

To date, players of People’s Postcode Lottery have raised over £1.1 billion to support good causes across Britain.
