Halloween and Fireworks Safety Snaps – Fun Giveaway Competition

Halloween and Fireworks Safety Snaps – Fun Giveaway Competition

Like most folks, we love the fun and festivities of Halloween and November 5th Bonfire Night celebrations in the UK. But our cats don’t – at all. Between us we have five cats, two of whom are naturally very timid. Socks, an ex-rescue, is one of them. She lives in New Zealand and gets nervous about the slightest loud noises – she’s also a real mum’s girl.

Brutus, an ex-feral, lives in France. He’s incredibly shy. Even the sight of another human outside the immediate family sends him running into our arms. (He is a bit of a wuss – but we adore him!)

The other three, Alfie, Izzy and Whitey cope pretty well, but they all share the same thing in common. They hate fireworks!

Whizzing, flashing, exploding light showers, followed by loud cracks or bangs or sizzling sounds – no wonder cats get scared. So what do we do to protect our furry family? We keep them safely tucked away inside when the partying is going on.

This got us thinking about what everyone else does. We decided to run a fun competition to find out. With a focus on cat safety, we’re offering two copies of our recently published collection of short stories: Completely Cats – Stories with Cattitude. Incidentally, our aim in publishing the book is to help cats in need by contributing a proportion of the proceeds to International Cat Care – a fantastic organisation with an awesome mission:

To engage, educate and empower people throughout the world to improve the health and welfare of cats by sharing advice, training and passion.

We asked them if they had any hints and tips on protecting cats during this period and they had – lots. Here’s a summary of some of their advice, but you’ll find much more if you visit their website:  https://icatcare.org/

We’ve teamed up with our pawsome pals at Katzenworld to have some festive fun.

You’ve seen a couple of photos of our cuddly cats, we’d love it if you joined in and shared photos of yours. Our giveaway competition runs between the 29th October and 5th November so feel free to post as many different cat Halloween and Fireworks safety snaps as you’d like, we can’t wait to see them!

For your chance to win simply enter your photo on Facebook or Twitter!

I’m extremely lucky, none of my 8 cats appear to react to fireworks. Although we do try to make sure our indoor/outdoor cats are inside by the time it’s dark this time of year. They may react differently when they go off, and they’re not in the safety of their home.

That’s wonderful news, Rosey, thanks so much for your comments. It sounds as though the steps you take to making sure your cats are safely inside at this time of year pay off nicely. ^..^

Fingers and paws crossed. I’m a little worried as his ears seem more sensitive to general noise around the house. And he absolutely dislikes the hoover…

          • RoseyToesSews says:

All of our cats hate the hoover! Taivas and Dewey are brave enough to swipe at it when it’s not on, and growl at it when it’s on. Neither will let it get really close when on though. The other 6 run as soon as it’s turned on. I feel so bad for them.

Oliver used to think it’s a snake and fly at it from all corners to kill the intruder. ?

Nowadays he only looks up once before going back to a nap LOL

Some cats will be very scared of fireworks, so they’re best kept inside at key times. Others are indifferent to them – much as different cats react differently to thunder and lightning. In fact, cats may treat lightning and fireworks as much the same. If your cat is a bit nervous when the fireworks start, but not scared stiff, and she doesn’t mind being picked up, try taking her to the window and watching the fireworks with her. Once she realises that for you, they’re interesting and not scary, she may treat them the same – from safely inside the house, of course.

    • Marc-André says:

Yes luckily all three of ours don’t seem to mind them while indoors even if they go off close to the window.
