Welcome to the Cat Street of Kobe, Japan!

Hi everyone,

On one of our many trips to Japan we came across this shopping / dinning street in Kobe that was very unexpected.

While we already knew how cat crazy Japan is we just didn’t expect to find a whole cat themed shopping area!

Different country flags showed cute cat themed scenes. And a lot of the shops had little cat guardians in front of their stalls.

Such as this giant cat welcoming tourists to Japan. 😀

Later that night we realised that the whole cat themed didn’t just stop at the flags and things like the blow-up cat dolls outside the shops…

Even after closing hour the shutters made the whole area feel more welcome! You want to walk around and check out all the different art used by the shop owners. 🙂

For those that have not been to Japan before one of the best part of many of these shopping arcades is that they are fully enclosed! So even if it’s raining you won’t have to worry about getting wet. 😀

We hope you enjoyed our look at this quirky little road in the midst of Kobe!

Thanks,

Marc

  1. This is interesting, since cats weren’t always welcome in Japanese society. My paternal grandfather and grandmother grew up in a fishing village in Japan; cats were disliked there because they would steal fish from the drying racks. They passed that antipathy to my father, who refused to let me have one. I’ve long since made up for not having a cat in childhood—my household has had five cats over a period of 30+ years. But I’m happy to see that Japan now openly embraces cats everywhere. 🙂

    1. There are cats all over Japan nowadays. :-). And yes I can understand how cats wouldn’t have been welcome in the past because of stealing fish. 😮

Btw if you’d like to do guest posts on any of your past or current cats please do let me know! I’m also working on setting up a Japanese version of Katzenworld. 😀

  2. We love it! We enjoyed Kobe when we visited Japan. Hopefully, we’ll be able to visit Cat Street when we are there next!

  3. This post intrigues me. Id like to go to Japan one day. The closest I’ve been to Japan was at Disneys Epcot. Id like your feedback on a few of my stories at Gastradamus. Check out the empty voter, Ms Scarlet and the ever so famous blue jasmine. Your feedback would be greatly appreciated

  4. Haha! That’s awesome! I’m looking into moving to Kobe (if I get to choose) in a couple years to teach. Thanks for sharing! 🙂
