Hi everyone,
Today’s Purrsday Poetry post comes from Patricia Carragon.
Angel Cat
(for Kat)
Two shining stars, like jewels from winter’s sky,
all matched her eyes of bluest gray. A stray
cat made her home beneath a car and she
was quiet. People, too involved with thoughts,
never saw those rare jewels from winter’s sky—
the angel cat that lived beneath a car.
She’d sit and watch a scene of passing legs–-
her face was like a mask that’s carved from snow.
She wore two pairs of mittens and a bib
that’s made from soft white fur to keep her warm.
The cat was quiet, yet hungered for love,
until I looked at her and saw her eyes—
the shining stars that glowed beneath the car.
I walked over to the cat and offered
my hand to greet her. The angel cat came
beside me, trusting me to take her home.
Her cat-like magic danced around my legs—
she encircled me, giving all her trust.
Standing so proud, she adored attention
as I stroked her soft white and ginger coat.
But I had to leave and walked up the path.
In silence, she watched her friend disappear—
a stray cat made her home beneath a car
and she was quiet, yet hungered for love.
I passed her by, but never saw the cat—
the angel cat that lived beneath a car.
Then days later, she ran over to me,
so puppy-like, so pleased to see her friend.
Her cat-like magic danced around my legs–
she encircled me, giving all her trust.
She loved to be caressed. She stood so proud
as I stroked her soft white and ginger coat.
She mewed for adoption, but l said, “No.”
She followed me and through the opened door,
her cat-like magic danced around my legs.
I shouted, “No,” and then, without a fight,
she slowly backed away. No cries, no purrs.
I went up to my flat before she fled—
a stray cat made her home beneath a car
and left without her human’s love or trust.
Days later, I saw her beneath the car—
her head was ripped, missing a chunk of flesh,
her brain—exposed, and fear destroyed her smile.
Her eyes of bluest gray had lost their shine.
She saw what happened. Sadness knew the truth.
I said I was sorry and for the last time,
I left her there and headed upstairs.
forgot about the kitten until now—
two shining stars, like jewels from winter’s sky,
all matched her eyes of bluest gray. A stray
cat used to make her home beneath a car
and she was quiet, yet hungered for love.
I passed her by, but never saw the cat—
the angel cat that lived beneath a car.

Ohh so lovely beautiful and sad!
<3
Thank you so much. This still haunts me to this day.
Patricia
oh so sorry!
Thanks Lynz <3
Oh this hit me hard as I just lost my elderly girl Harriet a few days ago. The author has a lot of courage to be able to write openly and directly about what happened to that little angel…I’m coping mostly by not picturing my girl’s death at all, only her life. I’m a coward that way.
Impeccable timing on the poem ~ thank you.

Parker, I wish you peace. Love never dies. Remember, God doesn’t make junk. She’s home now, a true angel wrapped in safety for all time. She’ll remember you, and she will understand. You’ll be reunited and not divided by the circumstance of earthy pursuits. ????
Thank you for your kind words. I truly appreciate them. 🙂 This has been…hard.

It really is hard to see a loved one pass. They are a member of our family. Allow yourself to grieve.????

Oh 🙁 so sorry to hear about your little baby!
Sending love to you and your sweet angel, Harriet. I really appreciate your kind response to this poem. It still haunts me to this day, I was never allowed to have a cat. Now as an adult living on my own, I am thinking of sneaking in a fur baby against my landlord’s rules. I live in a building where there are pets, but the new owner prohibits new tenants bringing in animals. I needed find a place quickly since my lease in my other apartment was up in a few weeks and mom was too unstable to live there anymore. <3
So sad that landlords don’t always allow pets. 🙁
I had less than two weeks to move. The rent and the apt was purrfect, but not perfect for a kitty. I am serious about sneaking in an older fur baby from a Brooklyn Shelter. I will talk to my super. Cats are basically quiet and easy to care for. Thanks again Marc-Andre for publishing this poem. Very appreciated.
Patricia 😀
You are most welcome! And as I said before we would welcome more of your poems and haikus ^^
No one can relate more than I. This is outstanding and very well-written! Just excellent.
Thanks ^^
Thank you so much for this comment. Unfortunately, the majority of my cat poems are in haiku format–the Kerouac-style and the traditional 5-7-5. I write mostly free verse and haiku. I am well known on the poetry circuit in Brooklyn and New York as a haiku poet. Once again, thank you, thank you.
Patricia
We would love to feature more of your poetry 🙂
will send you a few down the road. thanks again =^:^=

Oh, how sad.
Thank you so much. This still haunts me to this day.

I’m sure it does. My ex and I used to feed a feral cat and grew very fond of him. He went missing for a few days and we called a trap & rescue lady we knew who lured him into a cage with food (he was hiding in nearby garage). He had been hit by a car and his jaw was broken. It was January and he was cold and malnourished. The lady took him to a vet who worked with other feral cats and we paid for his treatment, but he died — had pneumonia and gangrene and was too malnourished. At least he was clean and warm and well taken care of when he passed. I’m sorry I never got to see him again, though.

Omg that is so sad!!!! 🙁
It was heart-breaking.

Reblogged this on MoéGrrL.
thank you! 😀
Thanks for sharing. Beautifully written. Sadly it happens too often. My wish is that it never happens again to any sweet kitty out there. Hope Patricia continues to write as beautiful and finds that furry companion for more inspiration 🙂 Hugs ~Kay
I hope so in the future. <3
Thank you <3
