It’s almost International Cat Day! In celebration of all things feline, partners of the day, cat-loving Agria Pet Insurance has revealed the most popular cat names of 2020! As ever, it’s very interesting to see how much popular films and TV influence the name choices!
Is yours on there? Or has your cat gone their own way with a unique name that’s the envy of the neighbourhood?
Top names for male cats:
- Milo
- Teddy
- Simba
- Oscar
- Leo
And for the female felines:
- Luna
- Bella
- Lola
- Nala
- Coco
Luna is by far the most popular name of all the cats insured with Agria. The specialist pet insurer has double the number of Luna’s insured with them than the next most popular names from both the male and female lists.
The latest Lion King film, released in July 2019, has also seen the names Simba and Nala move up the charts for 2020.
Since the charts in 2019, Willow has dropped out of the top 5, replaced by Lola for the girls. For the top male cat names, Loki, formerly at number one – most likely seeing a surge in popularity due to the release of Avengers: Endgame in April 2019 – has dropped down to 7th. As the God of Mischief, Loki seems a perfect name for a cat as well as an Avengers character!
Charlie has dropped out of the top five to be replaced by Teddy.

Is there a Freya in that list 😉 ?
I am shocked not to see Sa Majesté Louis Catorze, Le Roi Soleil.
I thought I was the only one with a cat named Jelly Bean but that name became popular too… usually spelled one word “Jellybean” (but I spelled it with 2)
I see a lot of cats come and go at the shelter where I volunteer and I don’t recall seeing a Milo, Lola, Nala or Coco, although I am only there once a week so I may have just missed them.
I had a Tom and now all I have is a Mysty.
