Summer is a wonderful time – warmth and sunshine are things that cats appreciate! Many a cat enjoys spending some time taking in the sun and will seek out any opportunity to warm their fur in the light, even if it’s only a slither of warmth on the kitchen floor.
Sometimes though the summer can get too hot. Like humans, cats will try to find ways to keep cool when the temperature rises. Lola’s idea of finding a nice shady spot to sleep, nestled away in a cool corner, is a good one. A place where she can still see the sun and the birds, but doesn’t have to feel like she’s getting cooked in the process!
Plenty of cool water is also important for cats in the summer. Last week when it was particularly warm we put some ice cubes into the cat water to make it extra refreshing for them. It kind of worked, but they seemed more confused by the strange things floating in the water fountain than anything else!
Some people swear by putting damp towels on the floor for their cats to lie on in the hot weather. We tried that last year. Lola’s always loved to lie on things that are on the floor – books, bags, pencil cases, anything! – but she turned her nose up at the damp towel and refused to even try it.
What tips do you have for helping your furry friends keep cool in the summer?
Love,
Lady Joyful
s/he is a darling! cats have such a soothing effect on our nerves! by their outstanding laziness I mean.
They can be very soothing, certainly! Thanks for commenting 🙂
I used to just wet my hands then pet my cat. Just so she ended up a little damp.
That’s a great suggestion! Thanks for commenting 🙂
Wonderful CATTY post. Its still CATURDAY, as is every day! I had a white cat like that once and she was a real love, Lady Joyful. Yours is a beauty!!!
Thanks – she is definitely a pretty cat, though the noises she makes aren’t always pretty! Thanks for commenting 🙂
Our cat is a long haired cat and an inside cat. We keep the A/C going but she does seem to get hot because she sleeps in darker and cooler areas. We give her fresh cool water every day and she is good at drinking water. I will try the ice cubes and see if that helps.
Sounds like your cat is very clever – I’ve known some that would sleep on warm concrete in the sun and have to be moved by their humans because they overheated! Let us know if the ice cubes work for your cat 🙂 Thanks for commenting.
My cats love the tile floor when it’s hot as it stays cool. The stretch out as far as they can so a lot of their body is in contact with the tile.
That’s a good point – our floor is also made of a fairly cool material. I’m sure the cats find that helpful. It’s very sweet when they stretch out as much as they can! Thanks for commenting 🙂
Adorable. How do they do that?
Mine like lying belly up in front of a fan. The ice cubes in the water not effective. About the stool photo above==what we think is comfortable and what cats think is comfortable are often two different things.
Our cats find the fan scary! To each their own, I guess 🙂 No, we didn’t have much luck with the ice cubes. I definitely agree about the comfort thing – some of the twisty shapes Lola contorts herself into look like they must be incredibly uncomfortable, but she always seems to be happy enough! While all the floor in my house are tile, you would imagine that Pablo would prefer that. However, being so young yet, he prefers cuddling up on me. Perhaps that means I’ve got the job? 😉
How sweet! Yup, that definitely sounds like you’ve got the job. It’s so lovely when they are cuddly. Thanks for commenting 🙂
Heavens, that’s a cute photo on top. We have a basement and I leave that door open for the kitties if they wish but since we have AC, they’re never too hot. I do put a fresh bowl of water out for a neighbourhood kitty who’s allowed to roam. I so worry for him. I set a treat on the chair on the porch that’s shaded hoping he’ll rest there. Sometimes I find him there. I don’t think he get’s much attention at home :/
Ooh yes a basement would be nice and cool. We live in a flat so our cats don’t have that luxury. Poor neighbourhood kitty. It’s good that you are looking out for him! Thanks for commenting 🙂
Cute kitties 🙂 Mine are spoiled, they are indoor only and we have central air.
Thanks, they sure are cute 🙂 Ah, what lucky cats you have! Thanks for commenting 🙂
What an adorable photo! Kitties can find comfort in the oddest positions! 🙂
Thanks! Yes, they certainly do. Thank you for commenting 🙂
Cat’s need chill time as well! Love how well cats can relate to humans from time to time.
Yup, they do! Thanks for commenting 🙂
hahaha love that first photo!
Glad you like it 🙂 Thanks for commenting!
My mother’s cat Marley likes to sit on her lap in front of the air conditioner while it’s running, he turns his head to cool off each side.
Haha! My own two love sitting just in the middle of our bed during the summer. We have a ceiling fan. 🙂
That sounds adorable! What a sweetie. Thanks for your comment 🙂
A soft, pliable ice pack with a soft towel covering it is great fur a quick cool down!
That’s a great idea! Thanks for sharing 🙂
Oh yes – the humans have a hard time getting their Ice pack back if they walk away from it! Hehehe!?
Awwww!!
Thanks 😀
Not quite falling between the bar stools!
Not quite, no. He has been known to fall off the sofa when he’s sleeping though! Thanks for commenting 🙂
They are gorgeous. for our boys we open the window when not humid but have the a/c on those uncomfy summer days. I have dropped and ice cude in their water from time to time as well
Great suggestions. Thanks for commenting 🙂
