The Friday Art Cat: Shinji

You may have read about Shinjji, the now seventeen year old Lynx Point Siamese mix.  He’s the Assistant Site Mascot on my blog, Mindflight.  I really love his markings, which are a cross between a standard Siamese and a gray tabby, while his face reminds me a bit of a cougar.  His eyes are nearly that brilliant in real life in the proper light.  It’s nice to see him smiling now, too.  For a long time he didn’t smile much but he’s settling in to his new life with me quite well.

I love working on mid-toned paper, so you can add both darks and lights to form a more interesting image.  This is the first portrait of a cat I’ve done in quite some time but I enjoyed it so much I may do more.  I used a combination of Conte, chalks, and both ink and wax-based pencils on gray smooth-textured cardboard.  I love combining colored pencils, pastels and chalks.  It allows a vibrancy and level of detail that I can’t get any other way.

If you want to read more about my cats as well as articles regarding creativity, life in general, good food, art, self publishing and more, stop on over to http://mind-flight.org.  You’ll be more than welcome!
