Endre Penovac’s work
I wanted to introduce you to this artist, Endre Penovac, who uses watercolour and ink on watercolour paper to create the most fantastic fluffy-looking cats.
The technique he uses is wet in wet – the paper is wetted first, then ink applied at just the correct time to enable it to spread out through the paper, creating patterns known as “runbacks”. Watercolourists often use this to create trees and atmospheric effects.
I think I will be ordering one of his gorgeous calendars: The Artful Cat 2020 Wall Calendar.

I’ve always found wet on wet technique very difficult to control: my attempts would bleed all over the paper or lose the delicacy that Penovac shows so well in the fur of her cats. I really admire someone who can make watercolors look so easy to use (says me, who signed up for a watercolor class this summer :0)
It is hard. There are some videos on YouTube on his technique, I am hoping to try some myself !
