2017 ‘Street Cats’ photography competition winning image – photographed by Rachel Hunter from the UK

“I stumbled across a tucked away scrapyard near Newport in South Wales and when I mentioned to the owner that I was a cat sitter and dog walker, he told me to look around. I started to look and it was like playing ‘Where’s Wally’ with cats. In total the man looks after a colony of around 20 feral cats and over the years he has trapped, neutered and returned them. On my second visit he turned up with fresh cooked chicken and ham for them all and he says along with tinned cat food this is what he feeds them nearly every day. They may be feral but they have a safe haven and full stomachs.”

The judges were drawn to this picture because it portrays a different life for street cats compared to the many pictures of street cats in hot and dry climates that they saw.

Rachel’s winning image features in the 2018 Street Cats Calendar which will be sold to raise funds for International Cat Care’s cat welfare work.

Great picture of the cats. It’s great that the owner of the property cares enough for them to feed them so well and to spay/neuter and return. He deserves an award too.
