A Healthy Cat is a Happy Cat

A Healthy Cat is a Happy Cat

According to the RSPCA, there are 7.4 million cats in the UK, and it’s clear we’re a cat-loving nation. As a cat lover, you no doubt want to ensure your feline friend has a long and happy life. Here are five ways to help you do just that…

Brush your cat’s fur regularly

Brushing your cat’s fur is a great way to reduce hairballs which are notorious for making their way into digestive tracts. And while cats are pretty good at cleaning themselves, brushing helps spread natural oils over the skin and coat to help them look and feel great for longer. It’s also a great way to bond with your cat. Experts recommend brushing your cat’s fur every day.

Spay or neuter your cat

Spaying or neutering your cat is the best way to keep them healthy.

Going into heat causes female cats a great deal of discomfort. But by contrast, spaying them helps prevent breast cancer and uterine infections, which are sadly fatal in 90% of cats. Meanwhile, a neutered male cat is less likely to roam too far from home and is more likely to stay safe.

Feed them right

A 2015 article from the Telegraph states that the UK spent over £4 billion on pet food in 2014, and this figure continues to increase. In fact, more cat owners are realising the need for natural ingredients, not just in their own diets, but in their pets’ food, too.

After all, nutrition plays a vital role in feline health. In an earlier article, we talk about how “cats have a natural suppleness when faced with life-threatening situations”. However, by feeding your cat natural foods from suppliers such as Webbox, you’ll be helping them to maintain these natural reflexes and high-energy levels throughout their lives.

The right foods can also promote a healthier-looking coat, help prevent allergies and keep your cat at the right weight.

Keep an eye on your cat’s gums and teeth

Just as in humans, it’s crucial that you take steps to look after your cat’s oral health. If your cat’s teeth are healthy, they will appear smooth white, while strong gums are pink with no signs of swelling. On the other hand, discoloured teeth and gums are a sign of tooth decay.

If your cat’s teeth are discoloured, they have swollen gums, or they’re drooling excessively having trouble chewing, or their gums are bleeding you should take them to the vet as soon as possible. Help prevent such issues by brushing your cat’s teeth every day. You should also take your cat to the vet for an oral check-up at least once a year. Chew toys are also an inexpensive way to help maintain oral health.

Make sure they exercise

Many housecats are overweight because they don’t get enough exercise. While they may be protected from danger indoors, there are great benefits to making sure your cat stays fit and active. Get your cat chew toys and let them run in the garden to help build muscle tone, improve circulation, relieve stress and stop them from getting bored.
