Cat Travel: Neko no Jikan Amemura – Osaka Cat Cafe Part 1

Hi everyone,

As many of you know we went to Japan again this year and of course as part of our annual trip we had to check out some of the Cat Cafes that we hadn’t been to so far! 🙂

The first one on our list was one of the newer Cafes in Osaka, this is the newer second branch of Neko no Jikan which Laura visited back in 2014. This particular branch is called Amemura and is in a district of Osaka full of hip clothing shops so not surprisingly attracts a younger crowd of visitors.

It wasn’t easy to spot this Cafe at first as it was actually on the 1st floor of a building!

Luckily there were signs downstairs to point you the right way up the stairs, once you find these you certainly know that you are going the right way!

We arrived at this Cafe early so were lucky enough to be the first people in and get to take photos prior to other people arriving!

Even better it was feeding time! So we got to see all of the cats come out of their various hiding spaces. 😀

I’m always astonished that so many different cats eat peacefully (mostly) near each other in these places!

One of our favourites during the feeding time was of course the cute little black cat as she reminded us of Nubia!

IMG_0437

Certainly as ferocious as our little one… LOL

There were also a number of Persian cats in the Cafe of which many are rescue cats due to their owners not wanting a cat with a “disability”.

As cute as this little white and black one may look due to the shape of his head / mouth he struggled a lot eating, which apparently is why many Persian cats in Japan end up on the streets or re-homing centres. People don’t like them drooling all over / being very messy eaters and in some cases needing to have their noses cleaned all the time. (Chronic “cold” syndrome)

None the less this Cat Cafe has re-homed many of these cats and is looking after them to ensure their well-being. 🙂

And this little fella has gotten very skilled at using his nose to push the food in!

And last but not least important a picture of one of Iain’s favourites cats!

This particular breed is called a Cornish Rex and is best known for its very short but soft fur. 🙂

Below you can see a map for directions to get to this Cafe. 🙂

More details can be found on their website here. (In Japanese)

We hope you enjoyed the first look at the Osaka cat Cafe – Neko no Jikan and are looking forward to more photos of the resident kitties. 😀

Looks like you had a great time. I never even knew places like this existed. This is wonderful. I hope you will share pics of the other things you did in Japan. A place I really want to visit. 🙂

Interesting that a business with so much work involved in running it can take care of so many Persians/Persian mixes but they are given up as “disabled” and messy by owners. They are to be commended for their rescue efforts and it looks like a great cafe.

And it’s not just disabled cats in Japan… It happens far too often that once someone doesn’t want their cat anymore it goes on the road :-(. The dark side of Japan. Luckily there are plenty of good people, rescue places, adopt a cat cafes and so on! 🙂

Real cool, Marc!! I like the sign with the cat and the coffee cup. I’m glad they are taking care of them, it is really awesome.

I just got email from the Seattle Meowtropolitan Cat Cafe yesterday that they have job openings both for a barista and also someone to work with the cats (who are on loan and available for adoption from our local humane society). They are located in the Greenwood Neighborhood (north of downtown) so if you live up here in the fairly cool Pacific Northwest of the USA do check them out.

On another note, having a few Persian (Iranian) friends over the years I discovered the in Persia which is modern day Iran, Persian cats are called Yazdi cats because they come from the city of Yazd.

It is sad that they are considered disabled.
And yes, the little black cat was just as ferocious with food as your darling Nubia.

I think the big problem for Persian cats in Japan is that they are overbred to the point of struggling to eat. Eye and breathing problems as well. 🙁 all due to inbreeding them to get more cats with that “Persian look” which unfortunately intensified genetic defects in their lineage.

Nice to know that the cats are being helped and in such a lovely place. They look content there. We need more of these Cat Cafes here in the U.S.

We just got a Cat Cafe in Vancouver about a year ago. I haven’t been as I rarely get into the city very often. However, they did get a surprise guest last week. They were full up when this woman and a young boy came to the door. They were about to send her away until they realized…it was Adele! She was in town for two concerts and just randomly picked the “Catfe” to visit. She requested no pictures be taken (so, of course, someone snuck a video). She did not order anything, stayed about 10 minutes and paid some major attention to a previous stray named “Frank”. It isn’t hard to believe that Frank was adopted the very next day!.

🙂 we’ve written about the Seattle one before as one of our friends lives near there.

If you’d like to do a guest story on your own visit it’s always interesting to see the experience of multiple people. 😀

    • Marc-André says:

It’s a great one. 🙂 Btw did you have any issues logging in / liking / commenting? We’ve upgraded to a business plan and some users have mentioned they struggled since.

  10. Eli Pacheco says:

As a cat owner, I know some of the most entertaining parts of being such are the little scuffles that break out! I would take that black and white cat home in an instant. What a cool place!

  11. RMW says:

I love the idea of cat cafes. We were supposed to be getting our own locally but that was a year ago and I don’t know what happened…. I’ll have to do some research… never realized before that Persians had such problems.
