Book Mews: The homemade cat cafe – Poppy’s Place

Hi everyone,

Today we are looking at the book Poppy’s Place by Katrina Charman.

poppy's place

A heart-warming new series, purr-fect for animal lovers, from a fantastic new voice in children’s fiction. Poppy’s Place follows the trials and tribulations of the Palmer family as they turn their home into a cat sanctuary with its very own café.

“The thing about cats,” Isla said to her mum as she helped put away bandages in the supply cupboard at Abbey Park Vets, “is that they are so loving. Not like a hamster who would rather chew on a stick than let you stroke it, or a bearded dragon which hardly even moves, and eats live bugs.”

Eleven-year-old Isla has been desperate for a cat for as long as she can remember. One day, she meets Poppy, a gorgeous cat Mum’s been treating at the local vets where she works. With no owner coming forward to claim her and no room at the local sanctuary, poor Poppy is homeless. Surely Isla can persuade Mum to let them take Poppy home … just on a temporary basis.

Little do the family realize the chain of events that will unfold with Poppy’s arrival. Soon they have opened their door to a host of abandoned cats all looking for their forever home. And Isla has come up with a crazy but brilliant idea to solve the problem – a cat café!

Poppy’s Place is a fantastic new series for readers of 8 years and older, and will delight fans of Holly Webb, Helen Peters and Lauren St John. Bringing together themes of family, love and hope, all wrapped up with a bundle of cats, Poppy’s Place taps into the growing trend of cat cafés opening up across the UK.

Overall verdict: This is an amazing fun little book! While it is most definitely targeting the younger audience it is still a fun little read for us adult cat lovers! 🙂
And for those of us that are slower readers it has a nice balance of illustrations versus text. The illustrations in the book are done by Lucy Truman and are cute yet not childish making it purrfect for younger and older readers alike!

Each character in the story has been well crafted by the author and play’s its own part!

The 192 pages will keep you engaged and wanting more! The good news the author is planning to make this an installment of multiple books. Once the next one is out we will make sure to post about it too. 😀
