Welcome Home

More often than not, Lola will run to greet us at the door when we come home from somewhere. It doesn’t matter where we’ve been or how long we’ve been gone, she’s always coming to welcome us home.

Admittedly that might just be an attempt to see what’s in the great wide world beyond the front door. She certainly gets very close to the entry and we have to be very careful opening the door in case she is sitting behind it.

Sometimes though she doesn’t run to greet us. This could be because she was asleep and didn’t hear the key in the lock. Instead she’ll sleepily poke her head out of her princess pod and peer down the corridor to see who has come into the flat.

Recently when we came home Lola didn’t run to greet us. She wasn’t waiting behind the front door. And she didn’t peek out from the princess pod. We were slightly confused. My husband went to have a look and see whether she was fast asleep somewhere. As he did that I turned around to hang my coat up and…

There was Lola.

Lola on the hat shelf

Apparently she had decided that the hat shelf would be a good sleeping place. Maybe she thought it would be an ideal place to wait for us to come home. Whatever the reason, she was staring down at me as if to say “Why haven’t you said hello yet?”

Love,

Lady Joyful

Do your cats greet you when you come home? Where do they like to wait for you?

MM had to investigate everyone who came to the door, and in the case of my nephews when she heard the door open from inside she’d reappear to check they were really going!

Mine will definitely come greet me. Sometimes she waits for me. And she looks for me if I’m not home on time. And she wakes me up in the morning, as she learned to do from the cat who raised her. He used to wake me and wait for me before he died.

That depends – if I come home early (and with flexi time I am not coming home the same time each day) they may both react rather annoyed at the disturbance. Sometimes my tom sits inside the living room on the floor and waits patiently for me to get ready, undressing (coat and shoes). At other days, when I am late, they both wait in the hall. And if she is feeling lucky, Kessy may even try to look where I came from.

Our times are quite irregular too, which is why I think she waits to hear the key in the lock rather than expecting us at a specific time. It’s funny how your cats react differently if you’re early or late 🙂 Thanks for commenting!

When I am early I interrupt whatever they do at that time of the day – usually taking a nap or grooming. When I come home late their schedule is interrupted to – but they are hungry.

She is sweet, when she’s not yelling 😉 Yes our boys rarely come to greet us either, usually it’s just Lola. I think that’s because the boys are shyer, and they want to be sure it is us before they come to say hello. Thanks for commenting 🙂

My guys always meet me — if I come home at a usual time. If I’m early, they might be asleep. I had one foster who would sleep against the door and I’d have to push her out of the way to get in!

    • Lady Joyful says:

Oh, that foster sounds adorable! We do have to be careful opening doors because we never know when Lola might be waiting right behind. Thanks for commenting 🙂

No worries, Lady Joyful, Lola is being a CAT. She is not about to give you what you want as she needs you to know how angry she is that you ever DARE to leave her. She is a beauty! 🙂

He comes, if my husbans comes, I am not so important. A hat shelf is very important, it is place for great afternoon sleep. Your Lola is very beautiful girl.

Our last cat would often wait till we returned home and then, having made sure we were safe, feel free to go out almost immediately. The present one is beginning to behave like that too.

My cat Tom follows everybody to the door, and tries to escape, too. Once in a while he makes it, and I’m out running around in slippers or socks or bare feet calling “Here Tommy Tommy…” I find him, and all is well with the world. Till the next time.

    • Lady Joyful says:

What a little rascal Tom is! Luckily ours haven’t got out of the flat, and if they did they wouldn’t get far as there would be another two doors between them and the greater world. It’s still quite a stress though! When I lived in England our house was right by a busy road and the cats (and on one occasion the dog!) would sometimes shoot past when the door was opened. That was definitely stressful trying to round them up to get them inside. Thanks for commenting 🙂

Of the three cats I have now, I have one, Smokey, the reigning queen, and eldest, who “might” meet me at the door, “if” she happens to be up and near the door at the time. 😉 However, we used to have an orange and white named Lita. She was very sweet and dainty, and watchful over her humans. She would meet us at the door each time we came home. If we had been gone too long, in her opinion, we would get scolded by her when we entered the house! In the morning, when I fed her and our other cats, she would literally do a head count as to what humans were downstairs. If we weren’t all downstairs, she took it upon herself to “check” on her other humans, before she would ever eat the first bite. Sadly, her time with us was short (four years only) due to being born with defective kidneys, but she left us with many wonderful memories. : )

Yodi does greet us, as you say sometimes having that sleepy look. Danny says that when I worked late nights, Yodi would apparently see my headlights on the adjacent street and perk up his ears and when my car was coming down our street, he would sit up and when I drove into the driveway, he jumped off the bed and would be waiting for me as I opened the door. It was so nice when coming home at a time when most people were asleep to find a sweet face and silent meow waiting for me.?

So cute, but we can imagine that you were scared, when she didn’t come at once. I always wait at the door, when I know Granny is coming home and I make happy feet when I see her 🙂 Pawkisses 🙂 <3
