Oliver & Nubia: Under surveillance

Hello everyone,

Oliver here for an urgent update from Katzenworld HQ!

Apparently the humans have REALLY gone too far this time.. They have found a COMPLETE surveillance system in the form of a Panasonic Smart Home Monitoring & Control Kit to watch our every step!!!

All previous cameras were easily avoided as they were only in ONE room… Not this one! Apparently it can connect to LOADS of cameras at once. 🙁

Why would the humans need a camera to spy on us anyway???

Nubia: Probably because you always pick on me!

Oliver: I don’t…. Most of the time!

Nubia: That’s precisely it!

Nubia: It does look quite interesting though! I wonder if they will be able to tell me who steals my crunches at night…

Oliver: *Coughs*

Nubia: Right on humans install this now so we can get evidence to convict my brother for thievery!!!

Oliver: What! Me! Never. 🙁

Nubia: My bowl of crunchies tells a different story!!!

Oliver: Agh… It can do night vision too. 🙁 I can’t even sneak past it in the dark…

Both: Well we will pass over to our humans now for the review.

Right let’s have a look at this nifty little system! ThePanasonic Smart Home Monitoring system is completely adjustable to your own personal needs.

For this review we got the Panasonic Smart Home Monitoring & Control Kit. It’s main item is the Hub which forms the Core of your Home Monitor System. You can pair the hub with a variety of different accesories:

  • Up to 4 indoor / outdoor cameras – So if you want to put your pets under surveillance (and as a benefit keep an eye on possible intruders. 😉 ) you can add a camera in a variety of rooms
  • Up to 50 alternative gadgets can be connected. These can be any of the following:
    •  Window sensors – Not just good to find out if your cat sneaks out through the window!
    • Motion sensors – These can trigger various actions such as recording a video on one of your cameras
    • Smart plugs – Can be used to turn appliances on or off! Remember that heated pet blanket you’d like to turn on for just a few hours? Right you can do that now through the app!
    • Sirens – Really just good to alert of intruders other than cats! 😮

If you wish to record video with your hub you’ll have to insert an SD card (microSD or micro SDHC) into the hub. These are sold separately and the recording time is as follows:

  • 2 GB card: 15 hours
  • 4 GB card: 30 hours
  • 8 GB card: 60 hours
  • 16 GB card: 120 hours
  • 32 GB card: 240 hours

The camera uses DECT Ultra Low Energy wireless standard that is invisible to regular consumer products and is safer than regular Wifi. It can work up to a radius of 300m so will work even in larger homes.

The hub can be conveniently controlled using their phone app on both Android and iOS devices. Key features in our opinion are

  • No monthly fees
  • All data is securely stored at home rather than going through a cloud service
  • Videos can be accessed from a mobile device or tablet
  • Two-way communication to talk to your pet

Below is a demonstration video of the manufacturer as to how it all works!

For more details on how to set-up each accessory you can click here for their YouTube playlist.

Overall verdict:
We love the versatility of this camera set! Not just can you connect multiple cameras to the hub you can also connect handy smart plugs to remotely turn items on / off. This has been especially handy for us in the colder periods of the year as we have a heated blanket for the kitties but wouldn’t want to leave it on all day! Now we can turn it on / off as required on especially cold days.

One of our cameras is placed near the above mentioned blanket and it’s especially fun to talk to Nubia who will answer back while relaxing on her heat pad. 😀

What is also great is that you can expand your system as is required! You can buy a starter pack to begin with and upgrade the system with additional cameras as and when you have the budget to do so. Prices start at 129.99 for the starter kit + 79.99 for an indoor camea or 99.99 for an outdoor camera. These are available from most major retailer as well as the Panasonic website here. (The later often has discounts on the camera add-on)

So if you want complete peace of mind what are you waiting for! . 😉

I love the glowing eyes! I need one of these for our kittens. They tear the house apart while we are at work. Nothing bad because I have the house cat proofed lol.

Wow… that’s weird to have all that for keeping an eye over your lovely friends! But at least it can be used in case of robbery… isn’t it?
Since years I don’t care anymore about the mischieves our are able to do in our house, but (apart from the one year and 1/2 Cocoa) all the others are older… :-)claudine

I’ve been seriously contemplating a camera for my foster room — especially for new ones, sick kittens, or nursing queens. I’ll have to look into this system.
