Cat Travel: The Seattle Meowtropolitan

It’s finally here! The Seattle Meowtropolitan Cat Cafe where you can sip a “catpuccino” or a “meowcchiato” while enjoying the company of several fabulous felines. And yes, even the pastries are cat oriented.

Cheesecake!

Cat cafes are all the rage in Japan and are rapidly finding their place in the rest of the world. And in Seattle, which is practically coffee central USA it was only a matter of time before the idea came to fruition.

A cat cafe is a place where cat lovers who are far from home and missing their feline companion or maybe they live in a rental with a no pet policy can have some quality time with a cat…or maybe several.

I had the pleasure of visiting the Seattle Meowtropolitan Cat Cafe a few weeks ago for their “soft opening” by invitation prior to their grand opening (December 26) to the general public. I was invited as a representative of Katzenworld Blog (katzenworld.co.uk) because Marc-Andre lives in London and I live a bit closer (just a bit).

I missed the name of this friendly feline

And don’t worry, you can walk in and get a coffee and pasty and not interact with the cats, buy why would you?

This is Pink in the cute hiding place

It is indeed a feline kingdom

I tried to get a good picture of the decorations on the floor but as you can see the reflections from the lights and the windows made it difficult. You’ll just have to visit and see for yourself.

Lots of places to hang out.

And hangouts for humans too!

You can sit and enjoy a "catpuccino" while petting the kitties.

As you can see from the photo above the cats have their own area separate from any food or coffee preparation. It is all approved by the Department of Health.

For anyone who is worried about it…the cats have access to a separate “bathroom” which they enter through a “cat flap” in a door.

An escape hatch back to privacy

The entire place has been artfully decorated.

The cats had only arrived the day before from their partner shelter Regional Animal Services of King County ( http://www.kingcounty.gov/depts/regional-animal-services.aspx ) and were not quite acclimated to their new surroundings.

Someone would rather stay in the carrier. Not too sure of the new environment

Others made themselves at home and explored their domain.

Rocky isn't too sure about these crazy cat ladies

Pink again

I know how pretty I look here

The special effects above were a total accident.

Here I am.....hear me roar!

The Seattle Meowtropolitan Cat Cafe is located in the Wallingford neighborhood in north Seattle (as in north of downtown) at 1225 N. 45th St., Seattle, WA 98103.

To visit with the cats reservations are required. It costs $10 per purrson for approximately 50 minutes. You can make reservations at their website:

Don’t forget that all of the cats are available for adoption and are looking forward to finding forever homes.

I doubt if any dogs would be allowed in the cat area but I’m sure they are…or can be..accomodated in the outer area.
But it would be a good idea to check first.

I would have to agree that that are probably allowed in the front area with the coffee shop, but unlikely in the cat area. Although the dog is probably is okay with the cats, since they have a ‘revolving door’ of felines, that may not all be okay with dogs (even if service dogs), they are probably not allowed in there. It’s definitely a cat palace and would upset the status quo more than I could barely to imagine!

Yes, that makes a lot of sense. The dogs are so highly-trained, I can imagine them just sitting there calmly while every cat in the place is fleeing in terror or hissing aggressively. Probably not a very relaxing experience for anyone involved, human or animal.

This is such a wonderful way that local businesses can promote the adoption of these kitties. I hope to see cat cafes spread further over the US. Japan has the right idea!

Thanks for your guest post. I already follow Katzenworld, but my friend Alys sent me the link. We’re kindred spirits living in two different countries. But we love to hook-up on holidays when we can. It’d be great to visit Meowtropolitan on one of our trips. What a clever business model. Looks like they’re doing well, all their merchandise is sold out. I also hope some of their felines are finding forever homes too. The black and white kitten near the coffee mug would be so irresistible, me oh my, what a widdle bundle of love. Wonderful story!
