Hide and Seek

Can't Find Me!

Can't Find Me!

A couple of mornings ago Lola decided that, rather than eating her breakfast, she would run around the flat like a crazy thing. She raced back and forth several times, tail puffy and occasionally making silly “mrr!” sounds. Every now and again she stopped, but if she thought we were going to go near her she would go off running again.

Eventually she went quiet. I was a bit suspicious and wondered what she could be up to so I went to try and find her. Turned out she was hiding. Well, “hiding”.

She and the boys all enjoy playing with the mat by the front door at times, and it seems that more often than not it gets pushed up and folded over. They like to sit on the doubled up part, it seems.

In any case, that’s not what had happened on this occasion. This time Lola had, somehow or other, rolled the mat around herself. She was quite happily inside her little tunnel that she’d made herself and indeed seemed to have calmed down significantly.

I let her be for a little while, then took her bowl of food to her and lifted the mat off. She blinked at me a bit but didn’t run off or yell “mrr!” at me, or anything of the sort. Instead, she ate her food.

And whilst she did, I picked the bits of leaf and general bottom-of-shoe dust out of her fur. That’s what happens when you roll up in the welcome mat!

It wasn’t exactly a very good hiding place really. I’m sure she could have found a better one, if she tried. I guess it suited her needs at the time though!

Love,

Lady Joyful

Do your cats ever hide under mats, bedcovers or the like? Is it a normal part of their daily routine or something they only do when hyper?

Humans couldn’t imagine how wonderful things are – a dusty and floppy mat is perfect =^-^=
Lady Joyful knows about the mystery behind objects … 😀
    She is really cute <3

Effie is always hyper when playing, so it’s hard to know. I’ve often seen a rumpled mat, but not one with Effie in it. . .In other words, she leaves her calling card and heads on through the catastrosphere to the site of the next whirlwind.

I love when cats ‘hide’ like this. When I bring Parker to the vet (her least favorite place to visit), she hides in the corner and blends in with the floor (yes, it is tabbycat colored!). The vet plays along and walks in, exclaiming, “Where’s Parker?” She is a good little hider! 😀

Parker sounds adorable. Our Sampson is very good at blending in with the mat by the litter tray (it’s black, as is he) which is a problem for us at night when we walk past there and trip over him! Thanks for commenting 🙂

Hide-and-seek is certainly a cat game and I’ve seen it played repeatedly by two cats. The cat variation is that it can be hide-and-ambush-when-the-other-seeks.

Some cats love getting head-first into dark places and one of mine would get into a box or big shopping bag and leave her bottom sticking out. Maybe there’s something instinctive about hiding safely in confined, dark places, or maybe cats are enough like us that it’s a back-to-babyhood experience.

    • Lady Joyful says:

That sounds like a good hiding place! One of my previous cats would, as a kitten, hide between the cushions of the sofa. We had to make sure we checked whether he was there before sitting down so that we wouldn’t squash him! Thanks for commenting 🙂

    • Lady Joyful says:

Well, I don’t know about that… Our cats are pretty good at hiding, and can also be good at seeking. But I suppose it’s true that they don’t necessarily know how to link the two to make a game 😉 Thanks for commenting 🙂

I adopted a BAT CRAZY cat whose LAST HOPE is a cat communicator. It’s great to see a NORMAL cat for a change…..I think we are out of hope. I don’t think animals CAN be evil, but this one must have been very abused and traumatized. So much so, that if the animal communicator cannot REACH her (and Holly is he best), I have to get rid of her my for my own health, safety and well-being.

SHE BITES LIKE A MAD CAT. And she is deadly serious and the bites are very infected. It was so bad, it stung to use my hands to wash and blow dry my hair….and then she AMBUSHED me and knocked down all the perfume bottles (which broke) and dumped over a huge bowl of food and water.

All I do is try to PROTECT myself and clean and TRY TO GET HER AWAY FROM ME. I told my friend: LOOK HOW ADORABLE SHE IS and his response was: SERIAL KILLERS CAN BE ADORABLE.

Sorry: I do not want to detract from your LOVELY story. It’s just super wonderful to see a NORMAL and fun animal again. Getting rid of Kit Kat will be very hard, as they will euthanize her. But it’s her or me. And, the bills are just mounting. I barely recognized my home. She trashes it every place in the whole house.

Please pray that Holly is able to REACH Kit Kat, or I have to call animal control…..

    Again, I love YOUR story!

Sorry to hear that you are having so much difficulty with Kit Kat. I seem to recall you commenting once before telling her story. I truly and sincerely hope that Holly is able to help her, for both your sakes!

Yes, mats are placed strictly for feline amusement. Human paw-wiping is, at best, a secondary benefit.

Lawjic, so sorry to hear of your struggles with your cat. I have a dog with behavior issues and it is so discouraging sometimes … Prayers and healing energy for both of you, and Holly, are on the way.

My Ali loves being under space rugs and carpets she can get a paw under to lift up. She is so black that I had to put night lights around our apt., to see where she is hiding, or sleeping so we do not step on her.

We often hide in plain sight, because if we cannot see you, we are pretty sure you can’t see us.. Astrid loves to do zoomies, and we never know what sets her off. XOCK, Lily Olivia, Maurcio, Misty May, Giulietta, Fiona, Astrid, Lisbeth and Calista Jo

Big Bad Baby Twinkle, all 14 pounds of her, loved being a Lump Under The Covers. I would tweak her butt and she would purr purr purr….BUT if Princess walked up to BBBT’s grandius buttiuss (still under the covers) and gently touched it, we would hear SNAAARLS coming from under the cover…. sigh…….

Cats always seem to see and chase things that aren’t there – to our eyes…

As for hiding under mats and blankets – I’ve never kept a kitty that didn’t love making mischief under a freshly dressed bed 😉 =^..^=

My 14 year old orange tabby seems to be in his second kittenhood as he will race down the hall and back again for no apparent reason. However, he still loves to help make the bed where he hides under the bottom sheet and wrestles with me when I tap the lump he makes under the sheet. Then we repeat the procedure with the top sheet. I know the med we give him for arthritis is partly responsible for this energetic activity, but it is so fun to see him act like a kitten again. He even brought his red ball to me so he could pounce on it after I tossed it past the couch. I love my boy!!!!!

What a lovely post! My two love getting on the bed as I make it in the morning. Luv seeing the lump hehe. And they do on occasion run around like mad kitties with their tails all puffed up. Luv it!
