Purrsday Poetry: The Maine Coon’s Haiku and Other Poems for Cat Lovers

Hi everyone,

Today we have a special Purrsday Poetry post as we thought it fitting to feature a book review of The Maine Coon’s Haiku and Other Poems for Cat Lovers. The review has been written by our friend hugr5 from hugauga.wordpress.com and of course includes a Haiku!.

The Maine Coon’s Haiku and Other Poems for Cat Lovers by Michael J. Rosen, illustrated by Lee White

If you like animals and appreciate good poetry this is the book for you.  If you’re interested in Japanese culture and different styles of writing read this book.  IF YOU LOVE CATS READ THIS BOOK.

Haiku is a three-line poem, usually five syllables [line 1] seven syllables [line 2] five syllables [line 3].  There are twenty haiku and twenty lovely illustrations in The Maine Coon’s Haiku

Each haiku describes a moment in a cat’s life.

There are twenty different cat breeds in this book.  (At the end of the book is a description and history of each breed.  I like that – mental stimuli as well as a spiritual jumpstart.)

Here’s a sample of one of the haiku in The Maine Coon’s Haiku

A Haiku is a verbal snapshot, a moment snatched from life and recreated in words.  I think it is a wonderful way to be introduced to poetry – short and sweet, relatively painless.  I recommend it to anyone who is interested in poetry, but is intimidated by the longer stuff.

The Maine Coon’s Haikuis a good read for both adults and children.  It is a soothing vacation.  I recommend it.

The book is available at the usual ones (Barnes & Noble and Amazon) as well as other bookshops

Awwww! You’ll have to enter purrsday poetry with some of your Haiku’s. 🙂 we normally feature people’s own work rather than a book excerpt. And also if you’d like we can feature your Cricket on a Saturday guest post. ^^

I checked Barnes and Noble and new copies are with my discount are $13.03 but…I used their Market Place Seller and ordered a used copy for $2.65, after adding tax and shipping it was $7.28.(no free shipping with Market Place sellers and besides….it’s coming from Tacoma GoodWill…a charity shop). I have had great success buying used books and CD’s this way.
My first experiment with used books from them was a delightful photography book called “The Cats of Venice” by Shin Otani. It is a lovely book, especially for cat lovers who like me also love Venice Italy. I’ve had it for a few years but they still show used copies available for as low as $1.99.

    Hi Marc (and everyone),
I thought I’d let you know that my “used” copy of this book came on Tuesday. It’s lovely and you can’t even tell it has been “used”. I love it! I read it from cover to cover the moment I opened it.
I find the “market place seller” with Barnes and Noble.com is often a good option. I particularly like it with CD’s as I can find some pretty obscure (read international….mostly Italian) things there that I can’t even find on iTunes. So I order the used CD….put it on my iPod and then give the CD to a friend. Very thrifty. I do this even when B&N has a new copy available because often with imports they want $30 for a CD. Yikes! So far I’ve had really good luck with both books and CD’s.
