Are You Sitting Comfortably?

Everyone knows that cats have a different idea of comfort than we humans do. Whether it’s twisting themselves into strange, contorted positions, squeezing into small spaces, or sitting on things, cats often manage to astound us.

Lola and Maisi in the speakerTake Lola for example. Lola likes shapes. She likes to sit in round shapes and on square shapes. In the picture above she is sitting in the middle of a ring shaped toy. She rarely plays with the toy any more, but she’s more than happy to sit in it and take a cat nap.

As kittens Lola and her sister Maisi liked to curl up together in an old speaker that we had. It wasn’t long before they were too big to fit in the speaker together, but even now Lola can be found curled up asleep in it from time to time.

The round baskets of the cat trees are also places Lola sometimes likes to sleep. If there’s something in the basket, well, that’s not going to stop her. Sure, it’s a bit inconvenient, but if she wants to be there, she’ll be there!

This feels different...
This feels different…

When she sleeps on my desk (as she is whilst I type this!), squeezed between the screen and the keyboard, she likes to make sure she’s laying on something. It doesn’t matter what. It can be a piece of paper, a pen, a hair-band… She especially likes it when she can use my phone as a pillow. She’s not even perturbed if it starts to make noises beneath her head.

Anything left on the floor is fair game too. Far better to sit on that piece of paper than lay directly on the floor itself. Princess Lola thinks the floor is only for peasants. It is beneath her. Unless, of course, she decides it’s not, in which case it’s fair game. Handbags and books are also good things to sleep on. Handbags can be squishy, if a bit lumpy in places, and books are nice firm surfaces to lie on. Things made of plastic are the best to lie on though, because they can be licked!

What’s the strangest place you’ve found your cat sleeping?

Love,

Lady Joyful

As a kitten MM used to sleep in a cardboard box from the supermarket. It had to be one that had contained 1l cartons of Orange juice. It was a snug fit, but it’s what she liked, and it was better than her alternative, which was behind the microwave oven! The box could be changed as often as we liked, but she did insist in a sheet of kitchen paper in the bottom of it. This we changed if needed. One day someone removed the piece of paper and forgot to replace it. In the morning MM was discovered laying on a whole roll of kitchen paper. Obviously on finding her humans had neglected her, not replacing her sheet, she’d got the end sheet off the roll taken it to her bed, except it was still attached to the roll so she’d filled her bed with all the sheets and was perched happily on her super soft bedding in her box. She slept in these orange juice boxes until she discovered the single bed, in the spare room and took that over.

In my previous home, I had metal shelves in my pantry…I kept all my big pots and pans on the shelf… Poncho, my big male cat..loved to curl up in the pasta pot..pretty tight squeeze… I even put the lid on it..he would knock it off… I ended up l putting the pot in the living room for him…never to be used again…lol

Thanks, she is a very pretty little thing. Pots and pans seem to be a popular sleeping place! My parents used to have a cat that would sleep in the potatoes..! Thanks for commenting 🙂

Pablo has three favourite ‘hang-outs’, my purse, my shopping bag and a book bag. They each have long straps and hang from the same place. He climbs up and plays hide & seek in them.

I can relate to this. Our cat will move to several different places during the day and make herself comfortable in each one. What a life she has! She is so spoiled and I can’t imagine how she got that way. lol

They are both so adorable – I suppose cats have a certain sense of security ! My owon cat-kitten miss H loves sleeping on my navy blue winter sweater … she is a clear cat !

No question: You may not think the cat is comfortable, but they know exactly what they like and where they wish to sleep or hang out. They are not creatures who like discomfort. Trust your cat’s wishes and let the be where they want to be unless its 100 degrees and they are so old, they do not know they are BAKING themselves. Rarely did I ever intervene in Cali’s choice of COMFORTABLE SPOTS, as to her: they were the BEST SPOTS! I trusted her to know what and where she liked to be or sleep! When they are still young, they may have very odd tastes. Let them be. Cats are all different and they can be hilarious with where they choose to BE COMFORTABLE!

Yup, exactly. People all like different things, so why wouldn’t cats? As long as the places are safe (we once had a kitten that got into a gap behind the fridge near a very hot pipe – not a safe place!) then I believe the cats should be able to choose where to be. Thanks for commenting 🙂

Many years ago I had a cat whose favorite place was in a shoe box (she overflowed it) on top of the refrigerator. I never got a picture of that (before the digital age).
Here is a link to one of Diavolo’s current favorites:

He’s pretty big so he has a bit of trouble finding just the right place….and he doesn’t care for boxes.

He does not even look that big … when my tom lies on a chair and rolls up you see less of the chair seating! (I looked through the whole gallery of 81 pictures of Diavolo).
And who was the cute black and white fluffy?

      • mvaden1948 says:

Diavolo weighs nearly 16 lbs! He looks bigger in person….and feels bigger when he steps on you. I was so used to my little Lili who only ever weighed seven lbs at her heaviest.

Before he passed away, my big Siamese would try to sleep while laying across the top of gallon water jugs. Somehow, he always managed to perch his big self right across the top of three of them. No idea why he did that, but there he’d be.

Haha! There must be something about that particular toy – I have a long haired tabby who likes to sleep curled up in the middle of the same toy! Luckily for her, she’s a small cat and she can totally fit inside the middle. As for my others, they’re all completely nuts too. I wouldn’t have them any other way 🙂

    • Lady Joyful says:

Yep, that toy seems ideal for the purpose! My mother-in-law’s cats have the same toy and also like to sleep in it. Lola can fit in the middle, she just chose to lean on it the day the picture was taken 🙂 Thanks for commenting!

Pretty Lola. Cats are crazy in their “comfort”. Just last night one of my cats was sleeping on the fan foot. Her body was draped over it making her ribs stick out. It looked so uncomfortable.
