Mews: #PetsInPortraits Book and Competition

Hello everyone,

There is a very cool and fun competition going on from the National Portrait Gallery at the moment which we thought would be of interest to some of you. 🙂

The National Portrait Gallery celebrates the launch of the book Pets in Portraits by inviting members of the public to share their own Pet Portrait.

Enter a photograph of you with your own prized pet to win prizes from the National Portrait Gallery Shop and PetsPyjamas, along with your own image displayed at the Gallery.

Pets in Portraits is by former National Portrait Gallery curator Robin Gibson. It tells the remarkable stories about the famous and historic owners, and the prized pets that can be spotted peeking out the frames of over 80 paintings and photographs from the Gallery’s Collection.
How to enter…

Pets in Portraits was originally published as The Face in the Corner in 1998 and is being reissued and updated this year to celebrate Britain’s ongoing love affair with our pets. The book tells the tales of intriguing images from the Gallery’s collection like: Anna Pavlova and her pet swan Jack, Wallace Simpson’s pug Dizzy and Queen Elizabeth II with one of her corgis.
A charming foreword has been added by Britain’s favourite animal lover Chris Packham. Packham introduces the book sharing his memories of seeking out the animals in portraits, as well as his own pet portrait – a selfie with his dogs Itchy and Scratchy.
Join Chris Packham and the subjects (human and animal) from the book and share your Pets in Portrait too. We’ve included some examples of portraits from the book that we’d love to see recreated twenty first century style. But we’d also love to see your take on Pets in Portraits. Are we a nation obsessed with pampered pets? Or do you work with a pet? Or have a pet who works for you? We’d like to see a slice of modern society’s pets through your own representations too.
The National Portrait Gallery will be shortlisting their top Pets in Portraits photographs. The shortlisted entrants will be invited to the Gallery to see their pictures displayed on the night at the launch party. The winner will be unveiled on the night and gifted vouchers for themselves (and their pet) of £100 from the National Portrait Gallery Shop and £200 from the pet lifestyle emporium PetsPyjamas.

Join in by posting a picture of you and your pet, tag @NPGLondon on Twitter or @nationalportraitgallery on Instagram and add the hashtag #PetsInPortraits.

Entries will be accepted through Twitter, Instagram or posted on blogs. Entries close on 8 April. The winner will be unveiled on 16 April. By entering the competition NPG reserves the right to use the images to promote the competition and book, and to reprint the images.

The book, Pets in Portraits £10, is available in the National Portrait Gallery shop or online at npg.org.uk/shop

Good luck everyone and don’t forget to share your entries with us as well! 😀

Thanks,

Marc
