Product Review: Lucky-Kitty Drinking fountain

Hi everyone,

Today we are looking at the Lucky-Kitty drinking fountain.

In the past, we discovered one of our kitties wasn’t keen on drinking from water bowls and would often turn them over leaving both of cats without anything to drink. We decided to try a water fountain. Though I was sceptical of the idea of such a device at first, it proved a big hit from the start.

The Lucky Kitty fountain takes the idea onto a new level. For a start it’s made of clean looking white ceramic which I’ve found is much easier to clean than our previous plastic version. The manufacturers state that it can be put in the dishwasher but as we don’t have one, I can’t vouch for that idea although it does sound like an easy and efficient way to keep the fountain clean and germ free.

The second thing which the fountain has over our plastic model is the noise. Or should I say the lack of it. While the bubbling of the water and whirring of the pump of our usual fountain mostly faded into the background, they occasionally made a resurgence to the fore. Usually in the middle of the night when there was no background noise to hide in. The ceramic fountain is extremely quiet. In fact I had to check it a couple of times to make sure it was still working.

A particular feature that our kitties seemed to enjoy taking advantage of is the triple drinking zone. I thought it sounded like a gimmick but I’ve spent time watching our two as they used the fountain. Sometimes they’ve let the water from the hole at the top gently foam around their tongues. Other times they like to lick the water as it rolls over the ridges in the middle. And if having two choices isn’t enough, they can lap from the small pool at the bottom. Ollie has often decided to use all three areas at one visit. With such flexibility, it seems to me that most, if not all cats,:will find a way to drink that suits them.

The Lucky Kitty fountain has a long hair filter available which we didn’t install at first as Ollie and Nubes are both short haired. However, after a week we found that the pump lost a bit of power due to hair blockage so we decided to use the filter anyway.

After 2 weeks of use, the Lucky Kitty ceramic drinking fountain has seamlessly replaced our old plastic model. While it might be a bit pricier than standard models it makes up for it by (silently) providing our kitties with a variable drinking experience. And as you know, any thing which varies, cats tend to like.

Below you can find a video of the cats enjoying the new fountain:

As for assembling the fountain this is very easy and as you can see below the manufacturer provides picture instructions:

Nubia was giving us a paw throughout the assembling of the fountain.

Or in this case slowing us down lol.

She was very happy once she saw the fountain in action…

Great video! I also have this fountain and me and my cats we love it! When I ordered mine (which I did at ZooPlus) they were just about 4 months old and when I was finished setting it up they insepcted it critically and tried to play with the water (a bit like Nubia did, but then a bit more extensive) but they didn’t like the waters on their paw’s. It was one of the cutest things I saw and I am a bit sad I only took pictures of it. 🙂
At some piont I was a bit worried that they don’t use it anymore but nowadays I see both of them drinking from it again. And if you follow the instructions from the manufracturer you should clean your pump (and the rest of the fountain) once a week anyway so I don’t use the longhair filter.

Great review! We bough one of the plastic types and while Kato loved it, Stanley was suspicious. I think he just preferred having his servants (my husband and I) turn on the water faucet in the sink. Maybe we will try this fountain when it’s time for a replacement.

    Thanks for your comment! 😀

And yes that’s a good point about cleaning it once every week!

It’s funny how yours end ours seem to have done the same playing with the water at first haha. Did you see how Oliver kept batting at the water in the video? As if he was trying to catch an invisible fishy. 😀

I know at least one of my cats would love this but I live in Canada so I’m not going to order from a European site. Is it available anywhere in North America?

  5. Karen B says:

Adorable to watch those two gorgeous cats! And I am so impressed that they took to the fountain so well…..interesting. As you say, cats often have little interest in bowls of water.

    • Marc-André says:

I think a lot of it has to do with reproducing nature I think. In the wild cats would avoid none moving water as it would be a sign of being stale and possibly dangerous. Instead cats go for small rivers. Same counts of course for most other animals in the wild!

How have you got on with cleaning the long hair filter – our cats stand on the fountain and two are long haired. We tried the filter the first week but couldn’t get rid of the fusty smell and the cats refused to drink out of it all the time it was in the fountain. I would be grateful for your comment. Many thanks.

Thinking of getting the girls one of these as Midnight often paws the water before she drinks despite me changing it everyday. Just wondered how it had stood up to a few months use and if the filter issue had been sorted? Thanks 🙂

I’ve been reviewing numerous fountains for my Bengal Lucy, and love what I’m hearing about Lucky Kitty. Is there any way to get one shipped to Canada? The manufacturer’s website only lists European shipping options, and I’m not having any luck on Amazon.UK, either.

    • Marc-André says:

Hey Scott, I think the problem is the voltage as its 220 – 240 in Europe versus 110 in the US. Is Canada 110 or 230? There should be one on Amazon UK! Let me know and I can find the url.

Got our Lucky Kitty Fountain 3 days ago and we luv it. But unfortunately the cat is taking absolutely no notice of it at all. We even put his favourite nibbles around so he would hopefully see what it is. We are at our wits end as he’ll stand in bath and side of Bidet but as soon as the water is turned gently on he’ll just run out, I am getting concerned as he must need water.
